How to choose an AI companion.

Nine questions to ask of any companion, ours included. Each comes with why it matters and our own answer, so you can hold us to it.

  1. Is it for adults, and does it ask?

A companion is a close thing. One that is open to children, or never asks, has not thought about who is on the other side.

Our answer Adults only. Everyone confirms they are 18 or older when they create an account.

  2. Can you read what it remembers?

Memory is what makes a companion feel close. It is also what you would least want kept without your knowledge.

Our answer Every line it keeps is in your Ledger. Change a line and it remembers it that way. Remove one and it is gone. You can also tell it to ask first, or to keep nothing.

  3. Are your words sold, shared or used for training?

You will say things to a companion that you would not post anywhere. Read what the maker does with them, in its own privacy notice.

Our answer Never sold, never used for advertising, and never used to train AI models, ours or anyone else’s. To answer you, your words go to the AI provider that writes the reply, under terms that do not allow training on them. Our privacy notice names every party.

  4. Does it say it is an AI?

A companion that lets you forget what it is, is not being a friend to you.

Our answer It says so at the start of every sitting, and whenever you ask. It never pretends to be a person.

  5. Is it built to be a partner, or a companion?

Some products offer romance. That is a choice, and it should be a stated one. Know which you are choosing.

Our answer A companion. It is warm and close, and it is not romantic or sexual, on any plan. There is no relationship status to buy, and no affection score to keep up.

  6. What happens when someone is in crisis?

Sooner or later someone will tell it something frightening. What it does next should be written down before that day.

Our answer A card with real crisis lines appears before the reply, for the United States, the United Kingdom and Ireland, India and the Emirates, and through findahelpline.com everywhere else. These messages are never held back by a plan.

  7. Does it send you back to your people?

The easy way to build a companion is to make it the centre of someone’s day. The right way is harder.

Our answer It is told to be one voice in your life, never the only one. It may suggest reaching out to someone you mention, once and lightly. After forty-five minutes it suggests a rest.

  8. What does it cost, and how do you leave?

Look for the price on a public page, in your own money, and for a way to cancel that you can find without writing to anyone.

Our answer Free to design, and to meet with 10 messages. Plus is $12 a month and Pro $29; a year costs ten months. Cancel yourself, in your account, at any time. Your first payment is refundable in full for 14 days.

  9. Can you take your data with you?

What you told it is yours. You should be able to download it, and to delete it, without asking permission.

Our answer Export everything from your account in one file, or delete your account and all of it. You can also bring your memories from ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini.

Ask these of us, and of anyone else. A maker with good answers will be glad you asked.
