What is an AI companion?
An AI companion is software you talk with over time. It knows your name, remembers what you allow it to, and is there when you want to talk. It is not a person, and a good one never pretends to be.
What it does
- Talks with you, by text or by voice, about your day, your plans or nothing much.
- Remembers what matters to you, so you do not start again each time.
- Helps with ordinary things: a message you are putting off, a plan for the week, a subject you are learning.
- Keeps the same character from one day to the next.
What it is not
- It is not a person. It has no life of its own, and it should say so when asked.
- It is not a therapist, a doctor or a lawyer. For serious things it should point you to someone qualified.
- It is not a replacement for the people in your life. The best ones send you back to them.
How it differs from an assistant
An assistant such as ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini is built to answer questions and finish tasks. A companion is built for the long run: one character, one memory, one relationship that carries on. The line is not sharp, and many people use both.

What a first week looks like
On the first day you choose or design it and say hello. By the third day it knows a few things about you, and you should be able to see exactly which. By the end of the week you will know whether it has a place in your days. If it does not, you should be able to leave in one step and take your data with you.
Is it good for you?
The research is young and its findings are mixed. Some studies report that people feel less alone after talking with a companion. Others find that very heavy use goes with more loneliness, not less. A fair reading is that a companion helps most when it adds to a life with people in it, and least when it takes their place. So look at how one is built. Does it suggest a rest? Does it ask about the people you mention? Can you read what it remembers? Is it for adults only?
Nine questions to ask of any companion
How Kwik L’IRIS does it
You design your companion from nine characters and give it your own iris for eyes, grown once and never repeated. It talks by text and by voice, in the language you write in. Everything it remembers is in a Ledger you can read, change or clear. It is for adults, it is not romantic, and it is told to be one voice in your life, never the only one.
Questions
Is an AI companion a real person?
No. It is software. A well-made companion says so plainly whenever you ask.
Does an AI companion remember me?
Most do, in some way. What matters is whether you can see and remove what is remembered. In Kwik L’IRIS every line it keeps is in your Ledger.
Are AI companions safe?
It depends on how one is built. Look for adults only, a care protocol with real crisis lines, memory you control, and words that are never sold or used for training.
How much does an AI companion cost?
Many are free to try and charge by the month for daily use. Kwik L’IRIS is free to design and to meet; Plus is $12 a month and Pro is $29.
